Go ahead and laugh, and then question. It’s all about whimsical exploration captured in my designs. I work on a design and then rework it until it feels right. I don’t usually plan, but delve into the process and have to feel the design and touch it to work through the steps of finding its identity. I call that process ‘strategic spontaneity’. | It’s like a discovery unfolding, rather than having expectations; and it’s driven by curiosity. That’s when we feel the most alive because we are engaged. I’m always looking for those engaging triggers. I’ve found that adding a small, unexpected element can change our whole perception and challenge the traditional way that we look at things. Not conforming to expectations forces us to pay attention. I’m striving to add that element to my jewelry in a way that it sits in harmony and fits in the context, but retains its edge of individuality. I guess I’m always chasing that moving target, but that’s part of the fun. The rich array of visual and textural mediums available to incorporate in jewelry design offers a multitude of possibilities to chase that target. The biggest challenge is having enough time to explore them. -Mauveduh
top | | Artist Statement: Joan Brookshier | | I handpick all of my rocks and surfaces to paint. I see things in them that begin as a mere glimmer that seems to grow before my eyes. Sometimes I lose the thought and walk on by. But some find me, and seem to scream from within their silent boundaries. When I hear the scream, I know its right. -Joan | top | |
